You wouldn't have part numbers by chance?

Re: Time for A/C Rebuild

Today I got the compressor and the brace on.  After install, I can tell that the belt routing definitely goes over the first (or the largest0  pulley on the crank.

So, I guess right on the brace from ebay

The compressor was a real drag.  I had to take out 3 of the 4 bolts, angle it, hold it in place, to get the bottom compressor bolt nearest the engine started.  Everything is a tight, cozy fit.  Had to move the coil back too.

Anyway FWIW.  The easy stuff is done now.  Onto the evap/accumulator/plenum stuff next….then there is the matter of the hoses.  OY.

I think I found what I was curious about.  I did some poking around the Vintage Air website.  They do have quite a few things that are interesting.

Thanks to Matt’s help, I got the right size belt—it’s a 56 by the way.  The front is done—new fan shroud etc., all installed.  Will post vid.

So I was cleaning up the blend door to put new low density foam on it, and then this happened.  Set me back a few days.  Cable on the way.

Bummer!  It is always a downer when you have to stop when you are on a roll.

BTW, I want to thank grumpin for his comment last.  Appreciated!

Gary,

Yes, I would have had both the evap and the accumulator in yesterday.  Now that will be next week.

One thing I wish was easy to find for us restorationists, is a proper foam for doors, etc.  As I understand it, the doors are all low density foam as it seals better, but I wonder about the hot/cold/mildew (that is a A/C type specific foam).

I found some A/C foam, but I have not found something like this, which I wish they had for our Fords.

ROADBLOCK:

While i wait for the cable, I decided to see if everything mated up.  Everything does but to the compressor.  The threads a HUGE.  It is like I need a erducer/adapter to smaller size.  Even my #10 fittings are too small.  Here is the compressor.  Advice?

Update:  OK, so I called around today and found myself at a Diesel repair shop where we have a guy around here who fabs up stuff all the time.

So, off the Compressor, is a large fitting, which he gave me a bead nut to test.  It worked. I will get exact dimensions tomorrow when I go back.   Now, as to the other end of the suction line:  It is BIGGER Still.  I think it is a #12 line nut off the accumulator.

—and so it goes…..

Basically I am going to end up with two lines where one starts at the compressor and ends up as #8 at the condensor. Oh and it needs a port on that line since it is the high pressure side.

Then I am going to have the compressor to the accumulator where it is something like in between an 11-12 and ends in a 12 line.  Ugh.

Update of the Update:

OK, so we got everything fitted up today.

The compressor is a Bead or Turbo nut.  The size of the accumulator, is indeed, a #12 line.

I will attempt to get everything together this weekend, and then, using bailing wire, fashion the lines, and take it to him for the build.

Will keep posted.

Yes, that is great!

But I was a little bit concerned when it looked like you were going to use bailing wire for hoses.  However, I think you are going to use it to represent the hose lengths.  Good idea!

Gary, he will probably need some chewing gum to go with the bailing wire.

I am pretty convinced Gary chews baling wire and spits tacks!<img class='smiley' src="http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/uploads/6/5/8/7/65879365/head-rotfl-57x22_orig.gif”/>

Thanks for comments all.  I ended up also finding two manual valves off a 1979 Ford A/c today.  Same compressor as mine from all I could tell, which I think is a York style.  I was there in hopes to find a cable line for the blend door.  Struck out of course.

I snagged the manual valves though just in case (I can send pic of them if anyone wants)—the suction line valve goes from compressor to #10 line.  The discharge from compressor to #8 line.  BUT they are old and rusty, so we will see Tuesday when I go back to my A/C guy if he wants to use them.  Both match right up to the compressor.  However, when I pulled them off they were still under pressure!

OK so the bad news and then more bad news:

I am a dummy, but I wish I was number dummy then I would have foreseen a problem:

So when my A/c Heater blend door cable broke, I ordered one from Dennis C.  It said 80-20 cable line.  What it did not say was w/o A/C.  I knew immediately when I got it I messed up.

So, to the MPC—yep….looks like I need an E0TZ 19988-A.  Good luck finding that!  I have a couple calls into people, but being the long weekend, it will not be until tuesday until I know if they have one.  I also had an idea maybe a 1979 cable of similar length might work, but I do not know.

So, my project stalled.  I ended up hooking up one end of the broken cable back up to the blend door, and leaving the other end dangling on the floor on the pass side to open and close the door by hand.  The most red neck thing I have ever done.  But these are desperate times.

I have checked rearcounter, and the site says they have 4.  We shall see.  I am going to buy 2 if costs are not exorbitant.  If anyone has another idea let me know.

I should have cross checked myself on this.  Ugh.  Ended up wasting a lot of days waiting for the part that I now have to return.

Have a great Memorial (or Decoration) Day one and all.

I'm not sure about the tacks, but I've used my share of bailing wire.

Bummer about the cable.  Is the center wire broken but the housing is ok?  If so maybe a lawnmower should can put a new wire in it.  Someone else on here was able to have that done.

My thought Gary. Worst case buy a cheap choke cable with enough length to do the job.

When you graduate up to a real redneck, you can hook some small vise grips to it to make it easier to grab!
