Upgrading dome light with pigtail?

I picked up a newer map light to install and discovered that the isolators on the wiring in my truck were busted so I went to the yard and found these isolators for the screws without wiring and the original pigtail for the newer version map light:



Is it possible to wire in the plug to my existing dome light harness? My dome light has two wires (one green/yellow and one black/blue) and the pigtail has a third wire (black). What do I do with the black wire if I use the plug?

Also, the newer dome light has a “wide pin” that prevents proper install. Am I supposed to grind this off or is it an indication that I got one that won’t fit?

The plug in the photo connects to the new (shown) dome light above the left hand bulb, correct?
I don't follow your last paragraph about the wide pin. Could you elaborate?

What year and model is the newer light from?

As for the black wire you can run a ground wire from the b pillar where the factory ground connects or you could ground it at the dome light itself - this is how the factory light grounded.

This is also assuming it's from a ~2000 pickup.

I bought the light off ebay from a late 90s Mustang. It was tested and working (and cheap).

The pigtail fits the plug. I pulled it off a Taurus or something at the yard.

So if you look close at the light it looks like the third screw (the one that screws directly to the metal roof) hits the copper plate for the ground. Does that mean I can pull out the black wire from the connector and just use the screw to ground the light to the roof?

For what it's worth, I am running this light in my 2003 Ranger, and I am not running the wiring harness, only the factory mounting points (similar to bullnose trucks). So grounding it with the screw is fine.

As for the tab, I don't believe the bullnose trucks have a spot for that, so just grind it off. I would try a dry fit of the light with the connector first, you may find that the connector doesn't allow the dome light to sit flush. Some vehicles that had this style light had a plastic riser that spaced the light away from the roof to make room for the connector.

You're right, the plug has clearance issues.
