Upgrading my 5.0 with AOD transmission to the PMGR starter.
Any opinions on brand to use? New or rebuilt? I pulled the engine out for a rebuild so now will be a good Time to swap it out.

I'm not high on Powermaster. I'm running one because it was on the truck when I got it, as was a Powermaster alternator. But it failed almost immediately and they don't sell replacement parts. You have to ship it back. Don't know if that applies to starters.
Were I to buy I'd probably go to DB Electric. Several on here have had good luck with their alternators, so why not their starters. Here's a link to their starters for Ford F-Series.

Never heard of that brand. Might be a possiblity.
Are the new motorcraft starters any good? I see them on Rockauto. A little more money though.

Yes, I'm sure the Motorcraft ones are good.

Thanks for the info.
I like the price and shipping on the DB Electric starter. Their web site shows that it is not available.

That's a bummer! Call them? They are pretty easy to talk to.

1990 Lincoln Town Car, 302, AOD and PMGR starter. Just look for that one, will also work on 4.9L and 351W with automatic transmissions.
My son and I started this bit years ago after finding it was a bolt on for trucks as well as cars. I finally had to change the first one I put on Darth sometime in the late 90s this past summer.

Amazon shows the DB starter as Prime, so they must have some in their warehouses.
At the same price too.... https://www.amazon.com/DB-Electrical-SFD0001-Starter-Thunderbird/dp/B007Y86938

The point I was making is there are other sources for a good starter, I will bet I can call Pasco Monday and he will have a new Certi-Pro (the brand Matt's old company carried, Pasco bought the name and stock) or a good remanufactured one on the shelf and that's here on Virginia's appendix.

My point is the numbers cross for all 5.0, 5.8, 4.9, etc automatic applications.
You can walk into any parts store and ask for a '95 pickup starter, or an Aviator starter or a Grand Marquis starter, or a Town Car. If 41014023 is in the system it's a hit. That's one of the nice things about DB's website. They have the Lester numbers, and all the competitors numbers. Bosch, Delco, Motorcraft.....

At work we've always used the hatachi replacement for the Ford PMGR starters that is what our supplier sells as they are more dependable and powerful than the OE units.
If I have to go PMGR on my 9.0:1 to 9.5:1 306 build I will use the Hatachi replacement otherwise I plan on sticking with the OE starter that is still going strong from since I got the truck in 92.

I know you're looking for a new one, but I grabbed a PMGR starter out of a 1996 F150 at the junkyard a couple years ago. It was a fairly fresh Napa reman, and I was under the truck getting something else anyway, so I grabbed it. It is now in my 1980 and working like a champ!
I haven't installed one in my '84 yet...but likely will when the time comes.
