substitution for 1980 f-150 vapor canister

My 1980 f-150 has a vapor canister with 2 ports as shown



It has one input as shown:



The incoming line has a tee, with the smaller line coming from the gas tank as shown:



The line also has a second teefurther up, with one going to the carb (larger line) and one to the purge valve (smaller line):




The question is that I have not been able to find one of these canisters, could I use a canister from an 83 - 86 f150 that has 2 small extra ports like the one in the LMC catalog and just plug the 2 smaller ports.... any help with this would be greatly appreciated..... the canister for the 1980 f-150 so far has been very difficult to find.

I dont see why not and you may even be able to use newer ones too.

Also note if you have dual tanks you would have 2 canisters.

Not all two tank vehicles have two charcoal canisters.

My 1981 F-150 is such a vehicle. Two tanks with one charcoal canister.  The tanks are connected to the canister with a tee.  My 1981 is also evaporative emissions test exempt in California due to this. Single tank trucks are not evaporative emissions exempt.

The one connection on top of the canister that does not go to anything should have a blue colored vent cap.




Most canisters would work if the connections are the same diameter on top, and has a similar attachment as the old one.

so far, I have only seen two tank trucks with single canisters. the tank vent lines t together on the frame rail under the passenger seat area.

thanks for the responses.... after seeing the pic for the 1981, which looks identical to mine, i started looking for canister for 1981 truck and found one on e-bay looks to be in really good shape... bought it...
thanks to all for the help, really appreciated.. hope to keep my 43 yr old truck on the road for another 43 years!

My truck is also an 81 F100 (11/80) and the under hood sticker shows 2 tanks truck having 2 canisters but had a single tank (flare side).

My parts truck is also a 81 F100 (2/81) and the under hood sticker shows 2 tanks truck having 2 canisters but had a dual tanks (style side).

The parts truck did have 2 canisters with the 2 tanks and both tanks did "T" in on the right side frame rail.

When I added the 2nd rear tank to my flare side I also used the 2 canisters so it all looks factory.

I'm not doubting you. I'm just saying that not all of them did though. It depends on the calibration.  Mine is a California equipped model built 11/80 and has a single canister with two tanks.

I will try to get a picture of my emission label sometime tomorrow.
