need to know, 1986 F150 atart and run problem

Bo Frodo

History: Truck has been sitting for around 10 yrs. I took on the project.
The patient: 1986 F150 short bed, 302 EFI auto trans, base model. VIN 1FTCF15N4GKA06002

As you can see from the fuel tank pic, I have major clog problems. So far I replaced with new: fuel tank (mid-ship),roll over vent valve, sending unit with low pressure fuel pump, fuel filter on frame rail, high pressure fuel pump, injectors, and inj. connectors.

Results so far: Fuel at schrader valve squirts fuel, engine turns over and fires, but will not catch and run.
I really love this body style and power pkg. I am retired and just looking for a dependable drive. I am a novice never done anything more than change oil or tire. Hats off to YOUTUBE, but I am at a crossroads and don't know to try or do net.

Any helpful suggestions???

Thanks for the advice, I replaced the rail located filter, but was unaware of a cannister filter after the high pressure pump.  I will check and replace and ck fuel pressure.

You say that there is fuel in the fuel rail on the top of the engine. How much pressure? The 5.0 EFI requires 45 to 65 psi to operate. There is a fuel pressure regulator on the left injector rail by the inside rear corner of the air filter housing.

There are two fuel filters on these pickups. There is a cartridge type filter in the frame before the high pressure pump and uses a NAPA 3268 filter. Then there is the canister filter after that pump.

If the tank looked that bad, I am gonna guess that the filters are plugged, fuel lines might be plugged and the diphram in the regulator is bad.

The first thing you might want to do is get a fuel pressure guage with the adapters that screw onto that Schrader valve, turn on the key and see how much pressure you do have there. It would help a great deal knowing the pressure that you have.

No cannister, from HP pump straight to fuel rail it is all Gas line.

The canister filter in also in the frame about 6 inches past the high pressure fuel pump. It is about 3 inches long and 2 1/2 inches round. It is held to the frame with a radiator hose clamp.

There is a cartridge (3268) between UP pump and mid-ship tank. That is all I have found.

Re: need to know, 1986 F150 atart and run problem

I will be taking pressure readings Friday morning. Still not found canister. I'll let you know what pressure is.

Here is the canister filter on my Bronco, Should be same spec as yours, 5.0, EFI, AOD This is the NAPA filter Number SFI23097

And here is the other filter

The high pressure pump should be about half way between them, the 3268.

If you have only one then my bad.

Did you get a fuel pressure reading?
Does this pickup have more then one tank?

Pressure reading is 20 , I have ordered a new fuel pressure regulator. Oh, I have only the one fuel tank (mid-ship)

That's about half what it should be.  A new regulator is a good idea.

RE: need to know, 1986 F150 atart and run problem

Bo Frodo

I am so frustrated with the fuel pressure gauge I borrowed from Auto Zone, I cannot get a consistent reading from it. Finger tight at the Schrader valve at the first test that resulted in a 20 psi. Now finger tight will not read at all. I have to back off the tightening so much that leakage occurs,  I get only 10 psi after new fuel pressure regulator install. I am going back to Auto Zone and see if they a different test kit. I’ll post again soon.
