On rare occasion, the fuel, temp and oil gauge will go full range, charge is fine. Dash lights still dim normally, radio works fine and vehicle continues to run without a hiccup.
Where should a guy start looking and cleaning as I can never force the issue to happen?

Being that it is all three gauges, I would look to the IVR. If full voltage reaches the gauges, they will peg. each individual gauge will peg if the wire to the sender is grounded . . but that isn't going to happen for all of them at the same time :) Check the IVR.

Check on Gary's information, he has a very good electronic replacement for the thermo-mechanical ICVR.

Yep - All three gauges is almost for certain the IVR/ICVR. The how-to for replacement is here: Electrical/ICVR.

Might as well wait and put the led replacement dash lamps in at the same time ...

The oil pressure, fuel gauge, and water temp aren't going to work w/o an ICVR. So, if they are it is there. See here for a pic of where it is: http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/icvr.html

Hey, now my gear indicator actually indicates the selection correctly. What a great day. Thanks all for the help.
