I need a tailgate for the 81 F100 project. I'd love to pick one up at the local pick n pull, but the number of 80-86's is so limited. Are there years outisde that range that fit?

Tailgates: 1980 - '82 tailgates use straps while 1983 and later tailgates use cables. Given that they do not directly interchange. However, it is possible to put an '83 - '86 tailgate on an earlier bed fairly easily, as described on the Tailgates and then the Changing Tailgates tabs here.
