Shift indicator compatability

So my 1986 f150 shift indicator is broken like a lot of them are. The white tube that holds the wire is snapped. My question is will the 1987-1996 ones be able to work even though they are set up a little differently? Can seem to find any at my junk yard old enough

I don't think the later ones will fit in our instrument clusters.  But, I haven't tried so don't know for sure.

Some guys have installed the external indicators...they even have them specifically for the AOD, etc.

Those are cool Cory! I hadn’t seen those.

Mine broke but I had one that David found NOS on ebay. As I read this I was thinking they should have left it like it was.

Somebody posted a picture of one installed on a Bullnose column, but I can't remember where now. I think it was on FTE, but I can't find it now. They don't look too bad.
