'Rufus Maximus' - Build Thread

Danny G
Holding a spot here for Rufus Maximus, translated from Latin to "The Biggest Red" seems kind of fitting.

What we know so far without looking at the door tag just yet.
1985 F-350 DRW 2X4
460CID V8
Assuming C6 transmission
Cruise Control
Factory AC
Dashboard LCD Clock
Ye ole cop style through the pillar spot light
Manual windows
Full trim interior with burl clusters, door pockets, and chrome trim on door panels.
Gooseneck Hitch
Full running board, and clearance lights.
Rear bumper is aftermarket and darn near like 1/2 steel. May be home made vs 3rd party.
Bull bar on the front looks period. I am curious if Ford sold bull bars like they did the bed bars for these trucks.
Dual fuel tanks. One behind the Axel center line, one driver side ish mid ship that's quite long. I think it's probably 19g.

Pictures and more details to follow.

Well... Lots of open and disconnected vacuum lines under the hood and equally as many disconnected, cut and or after market wires.

Let's start with the door sticker

She's.... Canadian? Maybe Rufus Maximus needs to be called Monty instead. The sticker is well faded this is what I can pull.

DOM : 12/84 - does that technically make it an 84 or made in 84 for Jan 85 sales?

Pretty much anything built September on is the next model year. (that's when the millwrights come in to change the lines over if any major changes are made)

Sometimes things like an axle are a running change.
TTB to D60 front for 350's or D60 rear to Sterling 10.25 for 250-350 were switched out as stock was depleted.
Not all plants changed at a certain moment.

I'm running through the door codes now. The axle one has me thrown 53 so dana 70HD but not sure which gear set applies.

you may need to crawl under and read the axle tag for specs. if it is an auto then is most likely a c6 for this model. non overdrive and fully hydraulic (no ecu). gear ratio close to 3.00 but possibly as high as 3.50 as these were not expected to be worked much beyond the 70-75 mph range. national speed limit was still 55 when this was made. and a 460 turning above 2k rpm made good sustainable power.

Will definitely look tomorrow. I think we are probably looking at 3.54 gearing.

Tired to post a bunch of pictures last night and failed lol.

Lots of open wiring and vacuum lines/equipment under the hood.

I have a wire on my hood... Potentially from a stock hood light?

Wipers just loose hopefully it's just the motor.

I can't find any on replacement door and window seals for these back doors. It needs them pretty bad

Uh, that's a vacuum actuated blend motor for the heater, not anything to do with the wipers.
The wiper motor is in front of the driver attached to the front of the cowl, where the shaft sticks through inside the cowl to an eccentric arm attached to the linkage bar that connects the two wiper arm studs together.
You can get new plastic linkage bushings in the Dorman HELP section of most auto parts stores.
Sometimes it's the output bushing of the motor transmission.
In that case it's easier to just replace the motor, complete, for $40 or whatever they get these days.

You should try Fairchild gaskets for those rear doors.
They have a pretty amazing selection, that goes back well over 50 years.
Or give them a call if you can't find what you need....

Yes, the random green wire is for an understood light.
It's built into the harness of all trucks, but if your truck wasn't ordered with the option there won't be anything attached.

This is your wiper motor. Although it appears wrong ( should be 90°. You can see the open hole at the lower right)

Look at this screenshot from RA.

You can easily see that both Precision & Fairchild offer gaskets for the REAR doors of a Bullnose pickup.

Lol yeah I put the wrong picture in there.

I have a new motor from the PO.

Also found the other end of the Romex not hooked to anything. And there is wiring plugged into the fuse box using spade connectors. The black wire from yesterday goes to this temp sensor. Trying to multitask here, my ADHD is shifting my focus. I need to get this wiper motor swapped.

Lots of cut or damaged factory harness wires. The two wires to the brake connector are beat up pretty bad and one has a splice on it.

The motor and the replacement both have 3 mounts. Should they have 4? Or is it just rotated?

My wiper motor doesn't look quite like that.
It can be tricky to fish the linkage through the cowl openings.
Check the connector for corrosion.

Also be sure to have the engine ground cable attached just below the wiper motor.
These motors pull a lot of current and need good grounds.

Wire nuts are a bane on humanity!
Right up with Scotchlok's and cheesy crimp connectors applied with diagonal cutters.

I've seen this sort of thing before.
The PO definitely had deep seated psychological issues!

it looks to be the correct wiper motor for an 86 but the open hole I believe is for a wire loom anchor

I think it was the brick nose that got the next gen wiper motor with the right angle, "worm gear" reduction assembly. the direct drive does tend to pull more amperage and their speed, power and performance varied greatly, and that is often due to the grounds and conductors.

Well, rear door gaskets are available.

FWIW, All crew cab trucks were made in Ontario.
Bill Vose can confirm...

I appreciate all the help. Im also worried about these seals/scrapers on the back doors. The one for the fixed window. I'm sure there is generic cut to fit material out there if needed. I could also potentially see a glass shop.
