I like to have a starter, master cylinder and alternator laying around, so I don't have to deal with going back for my $.
Funny you mention that, it has become a bit of a necessity here as well. Our government changed the tax rules on this sometime in the past couple years. It's not a big deal, but it is annoying on principle if nothing else. If you go in to the parts store and buy something, you pay tax on the full purchase price. When you come back the next day with your core, they will refund the value of the core, but not the tax on that value. The only way to save having to pay that tax is to bring the core in with you when you buy the new item...if it is possible at all.
I have a PMGR starter here for my truck that I will take in with me when the time comes that I need a new starter. I was going to rebuild this one, but screw it, I'll just buy a reman. That is, when my original 36 year old starter ever bites the dust...lol.
