What a creation. I’ve seen D60 4x4 vans before and I don’t remember the springs being mounted way ahead of the grille like that. I wonder if they are usually done with coils or if this builder just moved it forward to accommodate the huge wheels?

That has to be it - you can see that the wheelwells have been cut open as far rearward as possible, to the doors.  So they apparently found that it was necessary to move the axle that far forward so the big tires could steer.
