I am having some delayed success with installing the FI "y" pipe from Walker...It seems like the O2 sensor bung portion is bent too aggressively. I have an 85 and have exhaust manifolds from an 88. I ordered the "y" pipe for an 88 from Rock auto. Have any of you found difficulty in accomplishing this? I had to cut off 4" from the end in order to clear the crossmember/trans mount. I know it looks rough, but I didn't bend this whatsoever. I am about to file a return/replacement with Rock Auto depending on feedback from you guys. Thanks in advance!

That's a pretty ugly bend! Sure to restrict the flow the way it is pinched and rippled. But I haven't been around the 300 nor its exhaust so can't say what other brands look like.
And, I'll caution that while I buy a lot of things from Rock Auto, their claims and returns rules aren't all that friendly. Just a heads-up.

Others will have input, but we are in a very SLOW time on the forum right now with Christmas around the corner. Lots of guys with the 300 six, but many of them are busy with family at the moment.

Annoyingly I don't have any pics of the Y-pipe outside the truck or capturing that bend next to the bung. I bought mine from Advanced Auto and I did not have to cut anything. I suspect yours got bent in transit or packing.
Best picture I have. I have since wrapped that part of the pipe, so a picture now won't tell us much either.

Thanks for the feedback. What brand and for what year model did you purchase through Advance? VERY NICE frame-off setup, BTW...

The part is Walker #45166. It appears it's no longer available... Bummer. It was $62 delivered to my door.
It you're already thinking about getting one made custom, go that route. I might eventually do the same. The short arm of the 'Y' is poorly welded at an extreme angle, which causes a definite restriction. The reviews said as much, but for the money I'm not complaining. Is the one from Rockauto similar? I imagine it's the same part.

Yes. Mine is the same but comes with the cat. They no longer just sell the y pipe. I still think mine is bent incorrectly but instead of buying another I'm just going to get a tow from a buddy when I'm ready to fire it up and have the whole exhaust built at a local shop. Then I can just drive it home. Ideally. Ideally...

I am not using the cat and yes that is the only way I could get the pipe w/cat. I also don't remember needing to cut it to clear the cross member. Dave ----

I looked at getting another pipe from Advance Auto but they wanted $500 !! Ended up ordering from Amazon.com and got it for the same price as Rock Auto but with free shipping and free returns (with shipping free if I return it, too).
So the saga is to be continued for when this thing comes in next week. Then it'll be time to piece together a permanent exhaust if the new y pipe fits. Thanks for all the help! Soon, I hope to get the Sniper system up and complete the writeup so I can be considered a "contributor"

Here's hoping it fits nicely!
As for contributing, you already have. You contributed greatly on making my days on Wednesday and Thursday. Finding out you are "family" was a hoot! What you probably don't know is that we are really good friends with Joe and Ann. Joe worked on Fords for years and has forgotten more than I'll ever know about them. Ann is heavily into quilting, as is my wife, Janey. So we've bonded with them very strongly.

Thats how walker products look. The tail pipe I got for my '82 truck was not only a 2" tail pipe when it should have been 2 1/4" like the 351W but it had the same crunched down rippled bends. Same as my walker Y pipe had the same crunched down rippled bends. I did end up getting a newer tail pipe in the correct 2 1/4" for a 351W truck for like a '83-86 with a different hanger but this brand I cant remember off the top of my head but it has more OE like bends where the pipe is crunched down some but its a smooth crunched down radius bend not a accordian wrinkled bend. Big reason why I want to go aftermarket on the Y pipe for my truck cause Walker makes some real junky exhaust pipes for our trucks. Down side is Magnaflow which makes Y pipes for our trucks has since started only selling California Compliant versions with a pre cat in the Y and the converter or you can go with this other brand Bassani that does nice mandrel bent Y pipes but they only sell the Y pipe in a 3" single exhaust flavor. big reason why I cant decide on my truck Y pipe wise. Seems like everything from Walker Y pipe/Tail pipe wise is made either the wrong size, horrible crinkled bends, or they are not bent right to where they dont fit. I did get a off road Y pipe from Jegs for our trucks but its in multiple pieces and has a clamp under the oil pan which I dont want and know you can never weld that joint up and make it look nice. On the returns, I honestly never returned my exhaust pieces to them as it would cost me more to pay return shipping than what the items cost in the first place. So I will either sell them on ebay to make some of my money back or toss them.

Have you looked at the BOSAL 0794032?
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1472952 It looks like Rock Auto has it for about $232 plus shipping. |
I haven't. Sort of got locked in on the Walker for no specific reason. Ended up ordering from Amazon with free return shipping so I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the recommendation, if this doesn't work, I'll look at BOSAL. New pipe came in today. First one was clearly bent incorrectly. I did my best to install but it looks like I'll have to remove the ol' Offy and the new FI exhaust manifolds in order to set the pipe in place. This is my last resort. Here's the inside of the rear portion inlet. All I have is some long files to get in there and open that up. Once I know it fits.

You sure are getting poor quality pipes! But at least you got one that looks like it'll fit. Hope you can get it cleaned up.

That's just wrong to have to go through that much work to get a NEW part to work correctly. Welcome to working on 30 plus year old pickups.
