I think all of Ford's distributors breakerless distributors use an adapter like this. I believe the reason for it is to keep the same distributor size, and maybe casting, but allow for a much bigger cap to move the terminals apart farther due to the high voltages involved.
Here's the info on the 300 six, and the ebay advert seems to see this fits the 300.
