That they are - I kind of like the black portion that I always see as argent. I didn't realize that was an option.

I thought the black was only with the XLS models, but this indicates it was an option.

The chrome headlight doors trimmed with black paint was the standard headlight doors that were used from 1980 - 1986 with the standard painted silver (Argent) grille and the 1980/1981 optional black painted grille that was only available on the "Freewheeling" trim.


E2TZ-13064-C, E2TZ-13064-D
The "Freewheeling" trim was replaced by the "XLS" trim in 1982 and 1983.  The black painted grille was replaced with a gloss black (1982) or dark charcoal (1983) grille, and the standard chrome trimmed with black paint headlight doors were replaced by completely painted gloss black headlight doors for the XLS model only.  (The standard chrome headlight door trimmed with black paint continued to be used with the standard painted Argent grille until 1986.)  The XLS model - along with the gloss black grille, dark charcoal grille, and gloss black headlight bezels - was dropped after 1983, so the catalog is slightly misleading.

The optional 1980/1981 headlight doors that were chrome trimmed with medium Argent paint were only used in 1980/1981 with the optional chrome grille.


E2TZ-13064-A, E2TZ-13064-B
The optional 1982 - 1986 headlight doors that were chrome trimmed with dark charcoal paint were only used in 1982 - 1986 with the optional chrome grille.


The [standard] 1980 - 1986 headlight doors that were chrome trimmed with black paint and the later [optional] 1982 - 1986 chrome trimmed with dark charcoal paint don't look all that much different from each other.  I have had both in NOS boxes.  The black paint was only slightly blacker than the dark charcoal, and it was more of a rough *paint* that could scratch off.  The dark charcoal trim paint was more of a smooth *coating* that seems like it would last longer.
