I’ll fix the driver front fender at the weekend. Got a business trip…

Got out to sand the fender down to the base coat. The clear coat came off in sheets apart from a few small areas.
Now I am worried about the other panels..

Ouch!
I'm sorry to hear that. Do you think it's because you sanded to 800? I've never heard of that except for leveling orange peel. Often I don't even go to 400, and just use 360 below whatever my finish coat is.

I don’t think so, I didn’t sand the base coat or the pearl or the clear.
I think it may be down to the curing time. It has been mid 70s here and i should probably let it set up for a few more mins between coats. I sanded the hood and that was fine. Maybe it is just that panel, i did have more of the pearl layer in there and I think that is the issue with the color and curing and easy pealing.. All prepped for another go tomorrow. Since this photo i have reprimed the patches but you can see the base coat looks good.. And the clearcoat!!

Tomorrow is another day. I wish you luck, and good weather.

Crazy, right?
Here is where I am leaving it overnight. Luckily I am in for a week of temperatures in the mid to high 70s so I’m not in a rush to get this all fixed up. In fact I’m going to pull the hood and paint that too .. I should probably even do the cowel.. Scope creep once again!

Umm.... Is your base (pearl?) a 2k paint from the same manufacturer as the clear?

No.
The base is duplicolor The pearl clear is duplicolor 1k The clear is spraymax 2k. The 1k and 2k clears were very well bonded The 1k clear and base were not well bonded over about 80% of the fender

This post was updated on .
I can see the pearl in the shed but urethane over acrylic enamel or lacquer (duplicolor) is not going to bond without a week cure and 400 grit wet sanding.
Edit: urethane will always stick to urethane (1k or 2k) but if the basecoat has any off gassing left to do you have effectively put that same gasoline (solvent) impervious catalyzed shell right over the vapors trying to escape. That's why if I'm going to rattlecan I go to the paint supply and get everything made up in cans using the same system. If I were you I'd call Spraymax tech support and tell them what you've got going on. Technology Support Hotline: Tel. +49 62 69 / 95-540

Very interesting, thank you! I do mostly understand, but it has been a long week!
I will re-read over morning coffee.

I'm reading it over morning coffee and it makes sense. But I'd still call and find out for sure.

Ok, I understand and i think on my case i may not have left enough time to outgas. Well, on that one fender.
Redoing it now and taking much more time..

Progress being made. Winter will arrive on Friday night. I got the dent and hole on the roof sorted. Got the front right fender repainted. Started the wet sand on the other fenders with 2000grit and it went well. Hit them with compound and then polish with the DA. So in good shape for the winter.
Tomorrow I will blend the roof and clear coat it. Will then reassemble the front end. Thursday the roof should go back on.. cutting it close!

Looking good!
As for "winter", what are you supposed to get? We are at 27F this morning, but no moisture. Just COLD.

We are in the ow 30s in the mornings but at the weekend the rain comes in.. So I am trying to get Espy waterproof by then.
I am hoping to get the hard top on tomorrow, but to do that I need to get the paint on the cab roof sorted. I think I am nearly there. just going to wet sand up there and put some clear down. It should set up well enough over 24hours to put the hard top on... Then I can reassemble the front end. I have a new bumper to put on. The brush bar is not going back on. Looks like I will have to drill into the bumper to mount the KCs... Getting close!

What a huge difference!
The roof has a nice sheen even without the clear coat. I hope you can get everything done, and the hard top in place before the weather turns sour.

Yes, here's hoping it all goes well and it is buttoned up for the coming rain. (Send some of that our way?)

Decisions were made.. i did not have enough base coat for the hood and the cab roof. So i made sure the cab roof was sealed and mostly white and went to town on the hood.
I got good coverage with the base. 3 coats. Then 2 coats of the pearl and 3 coats of 2k clear. The temps cooperated, the bugs did not! I will be wet sanding a few out when it all fully cures. Anyhow. Painting is done. The hard top can go on tomorrow and then I can take a break. This was a much bigger project than planned. All I was trying to do wad put the fender flares on, but it was a very enjoyable experience where I learned a lot. In short: if painting more than 2 fenders: buy a paint set up. I am into this for many man hours and many dollars…
